Our new film ON CP-TOUR WITH STEWART MCPHERSON

The premiere took place in 2010 August 14 at the Botanical Gardens of the University Basel during the annual Swiss CP-meeting.  The film is a co-operation with the famous author of CP-books Stewart McPherson, who kindly provided his camera shots from several trips to the Guiana highlands, which we processed and edited for a DVD. To be seen are the amazing landscapes of different tepuis including many carnivores like i.e. Drosera meristocaulis, Utricularia jamesoniana and all 18 until 2010 known species  of the genus Heliamphora. But also Ledothamnus decumbens, a sticky insect-catcher on its way to carnivory, two species Brocchinia and diverse rare orchids make this documentary with many breathtaking helicopter flights on, around and above the tepuis a really unique film experience. The DVD is now available, please order by email.

€ 25,- plus postage.  Please click on the cover for more information.

Pulvinus and movement in Byblis - our new film on Youtube

14 days time lapse of Byblis liniflora show clearly that the carnivorous genus Byblis moves its leaves by pulvinus (thickening at the leaf or flower stalk base, enabling movement). This has first been noticed and published in 2008 by Brian Barnes (USA). Interestingly enough this amazing feature has apparently not been recognized or mentioned by other authors who described the different species of the Rainbow Plant in the past. We could find no text mentioning this fact prior to Brians examinations. So our congratulation for this finding goes to Brian Barnes (USA), ICPS director of conservation and president of the Florida CPS. Our topic time-lapse footage enables everybody to enjoy a genus (all Byblis species move by pulvinus) that not only moves a leaf by occasion, no, the "2 weeks in 1 minute" compression shows a nearly permanently moving plant.

But such a movement, what is it good for?

Easy to see now: a new trapping leaf and a flower stalk (wearing one flower bud on the tip) both emerge from the leaf axil and both grow up erect to catch flying prey until the flower bud opens. Now a pulvinus is developed in the common leaf axil and the sticky trapping leaf moves down, not to endanger approaching pollinators. The flower is still hold erect. After pollination took place, the pulvinus shows a new thickening and now the flower stalk with the ripening seed-pot on the tip moves down and soon after that movement is finished the seed-pot facing down to the soil opens and seeds are released without sticking to to the gluey plant. Due to the fact that the mainly annual plants (except Byblis aff. gigantea) are rapid growers, the time-lapse of some plants looks like a fascinating group of ballet dancers.

After 11 years a special exhibition "carnivorous plants" took again place from 2010 March 20 to 28 at the Regio-Messe Lörrach (trade fair). A display with large plants and movies from our HUNTING VEGGIES® fund could be seen and many visitors' questions found competent answers by prominent members of the German CP-society GFP at our info-corner. A plant sale (nothing comes from nature!) with the large range of Germanys' oldest CP-nursery, Thomas Carow, has been organised by the fair authorities. More than 60,000 visitors enjoyed the show. Also in the name of the exhibition managment we like to thank everybody who helped us to make this great event so successful.

A new spider arrived in Germany

In autumn 2008 we realised surprised that several spiders of species Zoropsis spinimana live latterly in our garden. Originally from Northern Africa and the Mediterranean this species is spreading north with the climate change and has first been detected in Germany only some five years ago. Since the nights became colder a large female immigrated into our tropical greenhouse, hunting for prey during the nights. If one comes up to the spider while it is sitting at the wall it shows a remarkable warning. It walks forward for some 20 cm, raises four frontfeet and shows its fangs (right picture). We have seen something like that only with large birdspiders until now. However, we decided to tolerate and to observe the immigrant. It did not harm anybody until now.

Since more than 10 years we find also several centipedes (Scutigera coleoptrata, right picture), called "Spinnenläufer" in the German language. Like Zoropsis this nocturnal predator also immigrated from the Mediterranean since temperatures are rising.

For more information (German language) click on the spider.

Nepenthes truncata caught 4 adult mice during 15 months at our greenhouse

This confirms again the abillity of tropical pitcher plants to catch even small rodents. This story has been published 2007 by the "Weiler Zeitung", the "Oberbadisches Volksblatt" and even by Indonesias top horticultural journal "TRUBUS". Our detailled examination on the digestion of such large prey has been published in DAS TAUBLATT (GFP) in February 09, and can also soon be found in the English language on this website. The story has also been edited as film for our topic DVD  TRIPLE "E" MEETS TRIPHYOPHYLLUM.

Our documentation on rapid moving marginal sundew tentacles

DVD  DROSERA: Snap-Tentacles And Runway Lights

First time presented at the ICPS world-conference 2006 in Frostburg (USA), our film was meanwhile also available as free download on the internet. Actually for the first time we feature a sundew (D. glanduligera) in detail that moves its tentacles as fast as the famous Dionaea snap-traps. And our systematical examination of more than 100 world-wide Drosera species - focussing on their glandless marginal tentacles - brought up even more surprises, as references to the origin of the genus more than 100 Mio years ago on the past continent Gondwana. Our results have also been published in Australian, German, and Italian CP-journals (see links below) and we are still very pleased about the great interest and feedback. The DVD is available in the German and English language and provides all information in an entertaining way for everybody interested in botany, however, with a serious scientific background appreciated also by CP experts.

The Badische Zeitung (Germany) wrote 2006 August 11: (translated) ... a DVD on sundew herbs ... showing impressive macro- and microscope pictures with 200-fold magnification.

The amazing  movement of the D. glanduligera snap-tentacles can meanwhile be seen on YouTube (click on text).

Just one feedback from the ICPS-Forum, USA

"Oh my goodness gracious! If you have not downloaded a bit torrent so you can view some of these videos, you are most assuredly cheating yourself! With the help of "Not a Number", I downloaded a bit torrent and some other application and was able to download and watch "Snap Tentacles and Runway Lights". Impressive would be an understatement. I'll be downloading more of their free videos, that's for sure. Please, treat yourself to one download. You won't be disappointed. A big thank you to each and every one of the people who made "Snap Tentacles and Runway Lights" available for free download."

DVD HUNTING VEGGIES® featuring BORNEO EXOTICS

(Sri Lanka, December 2004)

Not only since we provided a free download on the internet, this movie found a very nice feedback. Robert Cantley himself guides us through his Nepenthes lowland nurseries near Colombo, and through his highland nurseries near Nuwara Eliya. His comments on numerous beautiful pitcher plants guarantee a really entertaining report, not only for Nepenthes experts. We also document the large- scale propagation by tissue culture at the sterile laboratory. Our footage provides numerous botanical titbits for every friend of tropical pitcher plants, however, also some very sad moments can be experienced, when hundreds of wonderful Nepenthes must be destroyed for licence reasons - incredible pictures that we received by Robert Cantley.
